Close win for Central Gauteng A in SA U12 Teams Tournament

07 Oct 2011

The victorious Central Gauteng U-12 team

Central Gauteng A claimed a hard-fought victory in the KeNako South African Under-12 Teams Tournament at Kingswood Golf Club in George from 2-5 October.
The tournament featured 14 teams competing over three days of 18 holes each on a Kingswood layout that combined with the weather to provide a stern test.
Western Province led the field on day one by nine points, taking full advantage of the only day of good weather.
They were still eight points ahead of Central Gauteng A following a tough second day of rain and wind.
But a strong final nine holes from Central Gauteng A gave them the points they needed to win on 1184, with Western Province second on 1188. KwaZulu-Natal finished third on 1231 points.
The individual competition, played concurrently, was won by Western Province number one Luca Filippi.
Filippi posted rounds of 72, 76 and 73 for a wire-to-wire win on a total of 221, with Central Gauteng’s Keelan van Wyk his nearest challenger on 224 in what was largely a battle between these two golfers.
Filippi led by two strokes over Van Wyk following an opening 72. He stretched this to three with a second round of 76, and maintained this lead on the final day.
