Ekurhuleni golfer Christiaan Bezuidenhout underlined his growing stature with a spirited comeback from a quadruple bogey in the opening round of the RB German Junior in Gut Neuzenhof, Germany.

The country’s number three ranked golfer showed grit, determination and real depth of character when he rallied for an opening 74 at the par-72 layout of the GolfClub Heddesheim.

Bezuidenhout, a member of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation, was even par through seven holes when he collected a hefty eight shots at the par-four eighth.

After par at the ninth, the 18-year-old Ekurhuleni golfer rallied with a brace of birdies at the 10th and 11th holes and cut the deficit to two. He erased another bogey at the 12th with a birdie at the next hole and made five successive pars to minimize the damage.

Bezuidenhout rose to third in the South African Golf Association rankings after winning the stroke play and match play at the Western Province amateur and further cemented his position in the rankings with victory at the recent Limpopo Open.

However, the Nigel golfer will have his work cut out to make up an 11 shot deficit on the first round pacesetters, Philipp Bogel from Germany and Austrian Lukas Lipold.

Fellow South African Cameron Moralee from Kingswood carded a 10-over-par 82 to tie for 54th.

Meanwhile reigning Sanlam Cancer Challenge champion Michaela Fletcher leads the South African challenge in the Girls Competition,

The KwaZulu-Natal golfer closed with an even-par 72 to tie for 10th, five shots behind first round leader, Laura Lorenzen from Germany.

Cara Gorlei is joint 14th after an opening 74, while reigning Nomads SA Girls champion Ji Sun Kang signed for a six-over-par 78 to finish alone in 20th place.

The country’s number three ranked Lara Weinstein also endured a tough day at the office, coming home in 80 strokes with four birdies, a bogey, a double, a triple and a quadruple bogey on her card.
