Mid- Amateur Ranking System

The SAGA will be starting a Mid-Amateur Ranking system from the Central Gauteng Mid-Amateur Stroke Play which will be played on 31 October 2010. The system will be points based, as per the SAGA Amateur rankings, as it is felt that it makes sense to base the rankings on where a person finishes in a tournament versus his score compared to the rest of the field which may be a strong field or a weaker field. We also needed to have more counting events as for some provinces there are no Mid-Amateur tournaments or the players have limited access to Mid-Amateur tournaments in their regions.

With that in mind the following system was decided upon for implementation:

  • Points allocated to Mid-Amateur Tournaments (below) as done with the SAGA Rankings and finishes awarded a percentage of the tournaments' points.
  • Points picked up through the SAGA Ranked Provincial Open Tournaments and the SA Amateur and SA Stroke Play and also count towards Mid-Amateur rankings (based on Mid Am Percentage points breakdown).
  • SAGA ranked events have stronger fields and it is more difficult to attain points in Provincial and National Opens as opposed to in Mid-Amateur events (due to the strength of the fields). Mid-Amateur tournaments will therefore get allocated fewer points.
  • A minimum divisor of 5. After a player has played 5 tournaments then the divisor increases as per the number of tournaments played i.e. average points.
  • Points diminish at 4% per month so that they work themselves out of the system over a period of 24 months. This keeps current form players at the top of the rankings.

The criteria for selection for a National Mid-Amateur team will be that players need to play a minimum of 6 Mid-Amateur rounds in a year (this is to encourage players to support Mid-Amateur golf).

The points allocation for Mid-Amateur Rankings will be as follows:
